Good planning helps choosing and designing the right measures, or packages of measures, for a city’s particular transport context, and getting them off the ground.

A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) – a strategic plan designed to satisfy the mobility needs of people and businesses in cities and their surroundings for a better quality of life - can play a big role in this regard. To discover more about these plans, visit the dedicated Mobility Plans section on Eltis.

Hasselt and Genk: forming SUMPs across city borders

The Belgian cities of Hasselt and Genk have developed a combined Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), championing the notion that ‘mobility does not stop at the borders of a municipality’. The neighbouring cities worked together to design the SUMP. They took a spatial network approach to promote the use of public transport, inspire active mobility and discourage the use of heavily-polluting private vehicles. Implemented in 2014, the joint SUMP will be evaluated in full by the municipalities in 2019.

Closing school streets to traffic to create safer and cleaner environments in the London Borough of Croydon (UK)

Idling engines, traffic jams, dangerous parking: these are common issues around schools as parents arrive to drop and pick-up their children. These trips lead to unsafe roads and poorer air quality surrounding some of the most vulnerable people. In London, Croydon has trialled street closures in front of three schools in the past year to try to solve these issues. These trials have proved successful, so the borough is now planning to expand the initiative to three more schools before September 2019, and then to a five further schools in 2020.
