Vehicle sharing service for wheelchair users being developed in Italy

A new service consisting of shared vehicles, especially designed for wheelchair users, is being developed in Italy. The service, Moby, is the first specifically designed to give greater freedom and independence to wheelchair users. It is a type of car sharing service with vehicles that integrate mechanics, ergonomics and intelligent assistance technologies, and which are fully electric and have semi-autonomous driving.

Breda wins 2019 Access City Award for making the city more accessible to citizens with disabilities

The 2019 Access City Award goes to the city of Breda, in the Netherlands, for continuously making improvements to make life easier for people with disabilities.

The award was handed out this morning at the Access City Award Ceremony, taking place in Brussels. Breda is a source of inspiration for cities in Europe and beyond, which encounter similar challenges.

Accessible Europe: Cities pioneering transport for people with reduced mobility

In recognition of their duty to enable all residents and visitors to enjoy historic wonder and cultural heritage to its fullest potential, several European cities have made a concerted effort to champion accessibility for those with reduced mobility. The cities of Chester (UK), Viborg (Denmark) and Luxembourg City (Luxembourg) have all taken noticeable steps in recent years to pioneer accessibility and have since been awarded for their triumphs with the Access City Awards, an EU initiative celebrating equal access cities.

Switzerland adopts EU Regulation and requires electric vehicles to make noise

Electric cars in Switzerland will be required to make an artificial noise. The aim of the measure is to improve safety for pedestrians, especially the visually impaired.

Switzerland implemented this measure by adopting an EU regulation (Regulation EU No 540/2014). This requires that, by July 2019, all new models of electric, fuel cell and hybrid cars are equipped with an acoustic alert system that generates “engine noises”. The measure will apply to all new electric, hybrid and fuel cell cars by 2021.

Sustainable Urban Mobility Congress

European Day of Persons with Disabilities 2018

The European Commission and the European Disability Forum are recognising the European Day of Persons with Disabilities, through promoting awareness of the issues people with disabilities face on a daily basis.

The event will involve policy-makers, government officials, experts and self-advocates, to enable a productive discussion of upcoming projects for improving policies for people with disabilities. 

The Conference will enable participants to potentially contribute towards the shaping of the next European Disability Strategy and its implementation.
