Improvements to public transport services may address public transport vehicles and related infrastructure, as well as management techniques.

Norwegian government prioritises public transport


In a new action plan, the Norwegian government has identified public transport as the main solution for delivering flexible and accessible mobility. The action plan on public transport follows on from Norway’s National Transport Plan for 2018-2029. It covers nine urban areas in the country, and sets out how public transport should be developed to reduce pollution and congestion.

Vienna trains operators for driverless buses


Starting in autumn 2018, Viennese public transport operator “Wiener Linien” will start its first on-road tests of driverless buses in the city development area of “Seestadt Aspern”. By spring 2019, if the tests go well, driverless buses will be used to provide a regular service to passengers.

1st Meeting of the Cities of Free Transport

More and more cities in Europe have taken the decision to provide free public transport for residents - or are currently trialling such a scheme. 

This meeting in Dunkirk on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 September 2018, offers a focal point for city municipalities and all stakeholders with an interest in the initiatives.

With a range of speakers from European cities - and further afield, the meeting presents an opportunity to network and share experiences.

Plug pulled on Paris’ shared electric car service Autolib

Paris local authorities have ended the Bollore group’s contract to operate the Autolib electric vehicles fleet. Autolib will stop on 31 July in Paris and in the suburban partner towns. In the meantime, the free-sharing electric car system will gradually decrease its offer.

The decision to end the contract was taken in a vote on 21 June by the Syndicat Autolib ‘Vélib’ Métropole (SAVM), which brings together the 103 partner municipalities in Île-de-France, including the capital.

First cities to join the Urban Air Mobility initiative

Only one month after Geneva committed to becoming the first city to join the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Initiative, the cities of Hamburg, Ghent and Ingolstad have also joined the initiative. UAM aims to develop the market for this new dimension in urban mobility, which could help address unmet mobility user needs and offer new opportunities for European companies.

Metro de Madrid signs an agreement with EIB to receive financing of up to 200 million euros


The Community of Madrid, through Metro de Madrid, has signed an agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) whereby the EU entity will provide the Madrid company with EUR 85 million. This is the first tranche of a EUR 200 million loan to finance 50% of Metro de Madrid's investments until 2019, to rehabilitate and modernise its infrastructures.

According to the regional Government in a press release, Madrid has one of the "largest metro networks in the world", with 301 stations through which, in 2017, 626.4 million passengers passed.

New EIB financing for Manchester Metrolink tram network extension


On the 12th June, the Board of the European Investment Bank (EIB) approved a total of €4.4 billion of new financing for 30 projects located across Europe, Asia and Africa.

As well as providing financing for small businesses, social housing and energy projects, the EIB is also investing in sustainable transport, including an extension to the Manchester Metrolink tram network. The project consists of a 5.5 km network extension consisting of six new stops and 10 extra trams.
