City of Bruges uses bike to measure particulate matter (Belgium)

Bruges is the first city in Flanders to start using a bike to measure particulate matter on its territory. The results will be used to reveal and map hotspots which need improvement.
It’s an absolute first for a city in Flanders: only one bike of its kind exists and the city has bought it. The city aims to conduct systematic measurements for short periods to map differences in the concentration of particulate matter, says Hilde Decleer, Alderman of the City of Bruges. Until acquiring the bike, the city used a fixed measuring device which could not be flexibly deployed.

Belgium prepares for European driving licence (Belgium)

Belgian residents can now expect faster standard turnaround times for obtaining a driving licence.
On 19 January 2013, the third directive on driving licences will come into effect. The whole of Europe will permanently move to the credit card-sized European driving licence.

Air quality and public health: class action in 45 Italian cities (Italy)

Italy's consumer association Codacons has launched a campaign to draw attention to poor air quality in cities. Residents of the 45 cities across the country affected by high levels of air pollution from motorised traffic will be able to seek €2,000 in compensation.

Recommendations on monitoring pedestrian and bicycle traffic published (Sweden)

A Swedish research project has produced an overview of methods for estimating pedestrian and cycle traffic in Sweden and abroad.
The project gives practical recommendations to local authorities concerning the way the proportion of pedestrian and cycle traffic should be monitored through travel surveys and cycle flow measurements in order to enable comparisons to be made over time and between places.

EMI – ICLEI survey results: cities' views on urban sustainability

In the spring of 2012, ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) and EMI (European Metropolitan Network Institute) launched a joint survey on urban sustainability.
The survey was sent to city officials and policymakers across Europe and is part of EMI’s Knowledge and Research Agenda on Urban Sustainability, which identifies research needs in promoting urban sustainability.
