Definition – A community can be defined as a group of people living in the same place, such as the people within a city district; or a group of people with a particular characteristic in common, such as a religious community or a special interest group (e.g. the local cycling community). In some cases a formal local community organisation or local interest group
is formed, made up of interested individuals (often volunteers). Such groups may represent the wider community in the planning process.
Relevance to SUMP – Local community organisations, local interest groups and cycling/walking groups are identified in the SUMP Guidelines as typical stakeholder groups that should be involved through the SUMP participation
process.
