Groningen: the luxury problem of a 60% cycling modal share

By Benjamin Baxter / Updated: 08 Apr 2020

Groningen is the capital city of the Groningen province, located in the north of the Netherlands. It is a vibrant city with a significant student population.

Groningen has been actively promoting and planning in favour of travelling by bicycle since the 1970’s. The city now boasts a cycling modal share of 60%, which epitomises the cycling culture of the Netherlands.

Facilitating and managing the increased bicycle usage presents a new challenge for the City. Through Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning, Groningen is introducing innovative bicycle parking solutions, creating new cycle paths and adopting cycling safety technologies.
