The European Commission's award for sustainable urban mobility planning was launched in 2012. The aim of the award is to encourage the adoption of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) by local authorities across Europe and to reward outstanding achievements in each year’s thematic priority area.
In 2020, the Belgian city of Brussels has been announced as the winner of the 8th award. Brussels faced stiff competition from the cities of Kaunas in Lithuania and Wrocław in Poland.
The finalists were originally announced in February 2020 and Brussels was ultimately selected as the 2020 winner by the expert panel of judges due to their policy-driven vision, which is built upon impressive citizen participation, stakeholder outreach, and an understanding of the city as an ecosystem.
