The United Nations has identified sustainable transport as one of the main themes of sustainable development. Urgent action is required to develop more sustainable urban transport systems which address the twin challenges of rising congestion and pollution. To accomplish this, stakeholders including all levels of government and operators of public transport, roads, rail, aviation and marine transport must play their part.
UN-HABITAT has produced a report entitled 'Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility: Global Report on Human Settlements 2013', which highlights transportation challenges experienced in cities all over the world and identifies examples of good practice to overcome these. The report also provides recommendations on how national, regional and local governments and other stakeholders can use planning and design to accomplish a more sustainably mobile future.
