Project for Public Spaces is seeking an intern to assist with multiple transportation-related projects this Spring for approximately 21 hours of paid work per week for a period of 4-6 months (flexible). The position will include a number of professional development opportunities. At minimum, interns can participate in PPS’s training courses, and will be introduced to a variety of resources, tools, and techniques.

The intern’s primary task will be supporting two PPS projects: our Streets as Places Campaign and Placemaking Leadership Council (PLC) resource development  for a wide international audience.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Producing case studies and resources on the concept of Streets as Places.
  • Collecting images of great streets and public spaces.
  • Assisting in research and data collection for great public space activation projects from around the world, with a possibility for field trips (in and around the tri-state area).
  • Assisting in writing up resource documents, communicating with partner, and synthesizing information.

Other potential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing research and memoranda in support of PPS projects.
  • Authoring and/or collaborating on PPS blog posts and EXPOSURE photo blogs.
  • Participating in Placemaking workshops.
  • Producing graphics and diagrams.

Position available immediately. Interns will receive a $500 monthly stipend.

Desired Qualifications:

The position requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, research, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Candidates should have a strong interest in and understanding of public space planning, transportation, and/or Placemaking issues.

Ideal candidates would have:

  • Excellent communication and research skills.
  • Experience with project tracking, project management, and/or reporting.
  • A working knowledge of Placemaking, in addition to a passion for exploring and creating thriving public spaces.
  • Competency with Google Sheets and Excel.
  • Basic familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, In-Design, and Photoshop.
  • Basic familiarity with concepts of community development and engagement.
  • A degree either completed or in progress in a transportation, planning, or urban design related field is encouraged, but not required if the candidate can demonstrate familiarity with relevant concepts.
