Definition – Synergies occur when the simultaneous use of two or more measures gives a greater benefit than the sum of the benefits of using either one of them alone:

  • Benefit gain (A+B) > Benefit gain A + Benefit gain B

These total benefits may result across different policyinfo-icon sectors, as a result of horizontal integrationinfo-icon informing measureinfo-icon selection. See also complementarityinfo-icon.

Relevance to SUMP – Careful measure selection and measure packaging should ensure that complementarity and synergyinfo-icon are achieved. Consultationinfo-icon and cooperation between departments at the local level facilitates consistency and complementarity with policies in related sectors (e.g. land use and spatial planning, social services, health, energy, education, enforcement and policing, etc.)
