The EIT Urban Mobility Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) is an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Since January 2019 it has been working to encourage positive changes in the way people move around cities by rethinking public spaces as more liveable places, and reconciling mobility with urban life for healthier communities.

The aim is to become the largest European initiative transforming urban mobility. Co-funding of up to € 400 million (2020-2026) from the EIT, a body of the European Union, will help make this happen.

This leading European innovation community for urban mobility fosters integration by bringing together the key players across the whole value chain of mobility, and facilitates collaboration between cities and citizens, industry, academia and research, entrepreneurs and innovators to solve the most pressing cities' mobility challenges.

Five strategic objectives steer all activities and ambitions, and will lead the community to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable urban mobility system and make a positive societal impact:

1. Create liveable urban spaces;
2. Close the knowledge gap;
3. Deploy user-centric, integrated mobility solutions;
4. Accelerate market opportunities; and
5. Promote effective policies and behavioural change.

The EIT Urban Mobility partnership make a truly pan-European network of complementary stakeholders, representing a variety of disciplines and sectors ranging from transport, logistics, insurance, energy, waste, manufacturing, retail, engineering, computing software and hardware, to local governments, policymakers and regulators.

The initiative is structured  around five integrated programmes:

• City Club acts as a platform for the cities to work together with other local governments, citizens and civil society, and stakeholders in the local mobility eco-system;
• Academy aims to close the knowledge gap by training the next generation of urban mobility practitioners, foster entrepreneurship and innovation capacity among the Master and PhD graduates;
• The Innovation programme takes fresh ideas and helps them grow to fruition by means of hackathons, boot camps and innovation projects;
• Business Creation helps turn the most innovative mobility projects into successful business ventures, by offering start-ups and existing businesses training, advice, funding and opportunities for networking;
• Factory is EIT Urban Mobility´s exploitation arm and supports the process of scaling up solutions piloted and tested within the EIT Urban Mobility partnership and deploying them in cities across the world. Citizen engagement.

Involving local people, and ensuring citizen and civil society engagement in thinking about, designing, developing and testing new solutions in living lab and large demonstration settings is a priority for EIT Urban Mobility.
