The Latvian parliament (Saeima) is set to vote on the second reading of the amendment proposals submitted by the Riga City Council to the Latvian Road Traffic Law. The proposals aim to grant municipalities the power to regulate and monitor the use of electric scooters on their streets, as they currently feel restricted in maintaining order.

Under the proposed amendments, municipalities would have the authority to designate areas where the use and placement of e-scooters are prohibited. They would also be responsible for determining the process for issuing, revoking, or temporarily suspending licenses for businesses and individuals offering commercial electric scooter sharing services.

The amendments to the law also outline regulations for controlling the speed of electric scooters. Additionally, the amendments take into consideration the experiences of other nations and stipulate that electric scooters must be equipped with a state registration number plate, which must be affixed to the scooter's structure, and their registration would be mandatory.
