Definition – A good practice is a real world example (case study) of where a method
or technique has been applied that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved by other means. The case study and related approach are therefore used as a benchmark against which other activities can be measured. Best practice is closely related to the term “state of the art”, which is sometimes also used to refer to a collection of good practice examples.
Relevance to SUMP – It is beneficial to public authorities to look at good practice examples to see what other municipalities have been able to achieve. Different cities across Europe have achieved good practice in different aspects of SUMP development and implementation. /discover/case-studies provides a useful collection of these. A different perspective can be gained by inviting representatives of a city with a good level of SUMP preparation experience to undertake a peer review of your city’s SUMP process (see also benchmarking).
