Employers and employees should experience the connection between daily physical exercise and health and act accordingly. Because already 30 minutes of exercise per day increases fitness while lowering the risk of illness, commuting to work is suitable for integrating physical activity into daily life.
Background & Objectives
In Liechtenstein on the annual average only 5% of the ways to work are covered on foot or by bicycle. 30 - 40% of the ways to work are shorter than 3 kilometres. From an objective point of view many people have the possibility to cover their way to work by walking or cycling or in combination with public transport on most working days - benefiting their own health.
Progressive employers have recognized this fact and offer their employees covered bicycle stands close to the entrances and a possibility for bike repair, in addition to changing rooms and showers with towels and hair dryers. They lobby for a bicycle-fair infrastructure on the way to work. The campaign should bring more personal exercise to everyday life. Main focal point is a change of the participants' behaviour.
The Liechtenstein Association for Transport and Environment VCL suggested to the LIHK Liechtenstein Chamber of Commerce and Industry to implement an own campaign in Liechtenstein. Together with the coordinators of participating employers, the VCL created an action plan and took over the organisation. These 13 employers with a total of 8,200 employees (over 25% of the work force of Liechtenstein) participated in the campaign which is also supported by the LIHK and the government of the Principality of Liechtenstein: Hilti AG, Hovalwerk AG, Inficon AG, Ivoclar Vivadent AG, LGT Bank in Liechtenstein AG, Liechtensteinische Kraftwerke, Liechtensteinische Landesverwaltung, Liechtensteinische Landesbank AG, Liechtensteinische Post AG, Swarovski AG, ThyssenKrupp Presta AG, Unaxis Balzers AG, Verwaltungs- und Privat-Bank AG.
The campaign wass started and concluded with a media event. No participation fee was raised. Each participating company appeared as a sponsor. Prizes are vouchers of bicycle shops in Liechtenstein with a value of total CHF 11,500 (appr. 10,600 euros). Additionally a special prize of CHF 2,000 (appr. 1,800 euros) - a sort of company championship - was drawn among the teams of those employers who have proportionally the most successful teams.
Requirements to participate in the lottery were:
- Only employees of participating employers
- Team of 2 individuals
- Way to work and working time of the participants can be different
- The way to work is completely covered by bicycle or in connection with public transport
- Each team member does this for at least 50% of the individual working days
The campaign "Cycling to Work in Liechtenstein" took place for the first time from May 1st until June 30th 2006. At the winning company, 17% of the employees participated successfully; 206 teams over all companies.
The campaign will continue in the following years in the framework of the INTERREG III B Alpine Space project VIANOVA. ViaNova Website
