New app rewards good behaviour in traffic (The Netherlands)

By Sarah Martens / Updated: 01 Aug 2014
From today, the residents of Breda can download the new smartphone app Positive Drive for free. The app is designed to improve the liveability of the city by rewarding road users who consciously make safe decisions in traffic.
Positive Drive rewards car drivers who respect speed limits with (s)miles. If they cycle instead of driving, they earn more (s)miles. Bonus (s)miles are rewarded when road users choose certain trajectories over others. In this way, the municipality can promote particular cycle routes and locations.

With their (s)miles, participants can win prizes donated by enterprises based in Breda. These enterprises become Business Partners of Positive Drive. In this way, they and their customers become more mindful of their behaviour in traffic.

This project was undertaken in close cooperation with the province of Noord-Brabant and NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences.
