Clean and energy-efficient vehicles are essential if the European Union is to achieve its 2020 targets for improving energy efficiency, increasing the market share of renewable energy sources, and reducing CO2 emissions. The directive on the promotion of clean and energy-efficient road transport vehicles, which applies to all procurements of vehicles for public transport services from this month, will broaden the market. This directive requires public authorities, when buying a vehicle, to take account of its energy consumption, CO2 emissions and pollutant emissions over the vehicle's lifetime.
