Malta Public Transport has launched a new public transport on-demand service; TD Plus. It allows passengers to book a seat using a mobile app, choosing their own time and location of pick-up and drop-off from selected bus stops.
The new service currently runs as a pilot project and is designed to provide greater flexibility, more comfort and added value for passengers - while saving time.
“This is a completely new approach to urban transportation and the feedback we received after an intensive testing period in the past weeks has been immensely encouraging,” said Konrad Pulé, General Manager at Malta Public Transport. “Public transport is evolving around the world, and we want to be at the forefront of this by offering our passengers innovative and convenient ways of getting around Malta.”
The service is available every day between 05:30 and 22:30 on the so-called TD Plus bus. TD Plus is currently operating between Valletta and Pembroke, including St. Julian’s, Swieqi, San Ġwann, Msida, Pieta and Floriana. In case the pilot is successful, Malta Public Transport may extent TD plus services to a wider area.
Services are operated by a fleet of that includes six new premium minibuses that can accommodate up to 16 passengers. The minibuses are low floor and fully wheelchair accessible. Free WiFi is available and seats are equipped with USB charging ports for added convenience.
Reservations are made through the Tallinja App, the public transport app developed by Malta Public Transport. Software matches the requests made by different passengers to select the most efficient route. Passengers receive their trip confirmation and alert that the bus is on its way to the bus stop through the app. Customers can book multiple passengers on a single trip also request access for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Payments can be made using the Tjallinga Card (i.e. smart bus card) or credit or debit/credit card.
The updated Tallinja App can be downloaded for free from App Store and Google Play Store.
The app also provides route information and route planner for the entire bus network, as well as real-time information on buses and their arrival at each bus stop.
