Park and Ride in Warsaw. Poland

By News Editor / Updated: 22 May 2015

Park and Ride (P+R) System allows drivers to park their vehicles for free, if they have a valid daily, 3-day, 30-day or 90-day ticket for public transport. From the P+R area, drivers can use public transport to reach Warsaw city centre.

Background & Objectives

The Park & Ride System provides free parking spaces for vehicle owners who have purchased a valid ticket for public transport. The ticket has to be valid for at least one day and there are also options to buy tickets which are valid for up to 90 days. If the driver does not have a valid ticket on departure from the parking lot, a fee amounting to 100 Polish Zloty (PLN) applies - this equates to approximately 24€.

Conclusions

The Park and Ride system is beneficial from the point of view of changing the everyday habits of Warsaw citizens and the population of the Warsaw agglomeration and reducing the number of people commuting by car to the city centre. However, the costs of construction and maintenance of the parking lots in the city are high. P&R should be built only in zones II and III (urban area and suburbs area), and be located next to rail transport stops (metro, tram, train).

P&R areas have also been created outside the city, in the municipalities forming the Warsaw agglomeration, especially at railway stations. These are independent from the capital city administration and are operated by regional and local railways.

It is also important that the Park and Ride system is available for cyclists as well.
