During February-April 2008, the Vilnius Healthy City Bureau arranged a competition, inviting local school children to prepare and present presentations for the topic ‘My vision of clean and sustainable transport’. Pupils of local secondary schools (aged 12-15) and colleges (16-18) were invited to take part in the competition.Pupils could choose to work either individually or in groups. Each presentation was limited to 20 minutes and had to be prepared in PowerPoint format. A judging panel was organized to mark each presentation according to: authenticity, topicality, creativity, originality and general presentation.>
The different presentations prepared by pupils suggested a range of interesting ideas related to their vision for ‘clean and sustainable transport’ within Vilnius. These included ideas regarding the best ways of travelling (sustainably), ways to save energy, replacing petrol with bio fuels, local car sharing schemes.
Overall, the completion was very successful, with 108 schools and 550 pupils taking part in the competition. Feedback to the competition revealed;- 90 % of the participants said they would recommend taking part in similar events to their friends;- 82% of participants agreed the presentations were ‘meaningful and effective’One obstacle encountered by the competition organizers revolved around the requirement to prepare the presentations in PowerPoint, as many pupils did not have access to the software at home, which prevented them from participating in the competition.
