The bicycle is ideal for many every day journeys - for your own health and the benefit of the environment. And it is fun! To activate more people to use the bicycle for every day transports, the Liechtenstein Association for Transport and Environment VCL organises a raffle “Cycling for your health”. People working and/or living in Liechtenstein can participate.
Background & Objectives
About a third of all distances driven by car are shorter than three kilometres; about 10% are even shorter than one kilometre. For healthy people and in reasonable weather conditions these are cycling or walking distances - your own health will benefit. About 50% of all distances driven by car are shorter than five kilometers. For sporty people this is a comfortable cycling distance. Movement deficits are proven risk factors for many diseases and for reduced productivity. Just 30 minutes of activity per day increases our fitness and lowers the risk of getting ill. The distances we travel every day are ideal to integrate movement into our life.
Good communication with the public leads to a reorientation, selecting the means of transport and accepting the bicycle as a viable alternative for everyday transport.
A competition should bring more personal movement into the everyday life and make the bicycle a more popular means of transport again.
Requirements to participate are:
- ride 500 km by bicycle between May 1st and October 31st
- age above12
The prizes are:
- four bicycles
- ten vouchers from bicycle shops with a total value of 5.000 €
In the last few years the number of participants is constant around 250. Every year about one third are new participants. The potential is over 1,000 people according to the modal split for everyday distances. It is expected that with the currently starting campaign of "Cycling to Work in Liechtenstein" the number of participants in the competition Cycling for your health should clearly increase.
During the implementation, several interested parties that worked as both sponsors and advertisers were included into the project work. In 2009 these are: Liechtensteinische Landesbank AG and additionally FKB Die liechtensteinische Gesundheitskasse, ThyssenKrupp Presta AG and Swarovski AG.
It turned out that it was very important to have additional sponsors besides a main sponsor (Liechtensteinische Landesbank AG) in order to achieve a broader support and to arrange an attractive competition. Bicycle shops also took part sponsoring vouchers; they can provide the main prizes. The public was informed by media announcements, radio spots and a media conference by the VCL and the main sponsor at launch of the competition.
In 2011 the competition is implemented for the 14th consecutive time.
The campaign will continue in the following years in the framework of the INTERREG III B Alpine Space project VIANOVA.
