The Royal Automobile Club of Catalonia (RACC) started this year a mobility campaign, focused on minimizing emissions due to more energy-efficient driving.
Background & ObjectivesThe campaign “E-driving” (Econducción) wants to contribute to a lower energy consumption through a change of the drivers’ behaviour.A survey realized by RACC, shows that 86% of the Spanish drivers say about themselves that they care for the environment. This percentage represents a 5% increase compared to the year 2007. In reality, the drivers’ level of know-how on sustainability and environmental aspects is limited. Only 16,7% of the surveyed persons admit that they themselves have to show an active behaviour.More than half of the Spaniards, 67%, would buy an ecological vehicle. Measures related to incentives for buying less contaminating vehicles are evaluated positively in the survey. The survey also shows that 21% do not use public transport due to its low speed and 15,4% because no suitable transport routes exist for their mobility needs.
ImplementationThis survey gave way to the creation of a mixed commission of experts on environmental issues and expert of the automobile sector, initiated by RACC. This commission includes Spanish as well as international practitioners and theoreticians on mobility and environmental issues.The creation of this commission was the starting point for a deep refection of the car drivers’ behaviour. One of the main proposals of this expert group consisted in initiating a sensibilization campaign to mitigate information and educational deficits observed among the drivers.>In the following, the “E-driving” campaign was created with three main fields to work on: firstly the sensibilization towards a more sustainable mobility, secondly an increase of public transport use and thirdly the promotion of energy-efficient driving.The recommendations are concentrated on the selection of the most adequate transport mode, a very rational use of the car and energy-efficient driving. The practical measures were coordinated by administrations, automobile companies and drivers.Three main messages were determined:
- Madrid is realizing E-driving: whenever possible, take public transport.
- Madrid is realizing E-driving: avoid extreme acceleration and braking. You will save up to 11% of fuel.
- Madrid is realizing E-driving: do not drive, but walk short distances.
ConclusionsMadrid and Barcelona were the first cities to implement the campaign. The messages were displayed on the urban buses and on posters in the street. The sensibilization of the drivers wants to be obtained by the high presence of the key messages in the urban areas. At the same time, a website (www.econduccion.es) was published. This website includes a description of the campaign itself, recommendations on the acquisition of ecological vehicles, documentation on automobile and environmental issues as well as interactive information on sustainable mobility.The campaign, initially only introduced in Madrid and Barcelona, has been extended to other Spanish cities: Granada, Malaga, La Coruña and El Ferrol.
