Bike service for students ‘Velo’ (city of Leuven. Belgium)

Since 1994, the non-profit organisation ‘Velo’ promotes the bicycle as an ecological means of transport in the city by recycling, renting and repairing bikes for students in the city of Leuven.

Background & Objectives

In order to encourage bicycle use amongst students in the city of Leuven, the non-profit organisation ‘Velo’ was established. Thanks to the support of the city of Leuven, the Catholic University of Leuven, the Leuven Student Organisations and the Flemish Christian Employees Association this service can be provided for.>

Implementation

Velo offers a bike rental and repair service for students and is organised as a training and employment project for young people.At Velo, students in the city of Leuven can rent a safe, fully equipped and registered second-hand bike with a solid lock. Bikes can be rented for a month or up to one year at cheap rates. A 12 month subscription costs up to 35 euro.Further, students can come to repair their own bikes at the bike repair shop or have their bikes repaired for a small price.

Conclusions

Since 1994, Velo rents out an ever increasing number of bikes. In 2007, 5 165 bikes were rented out and 5 544 times a Velo bike got repaired.
