Dr. Joachim Lohse, Bremen’s Senator for Environment, Urban Development and Mobility explains how Bremen have managed mobility in Bremen, encouraging active travel over the use of private vehicles - and promoting the use of car sharing schemes as an alternative to private vehicle ownership.

The city of Bremen Bremen has managed to fulfil EU Air Quality requirements and has the lowest concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) compared to other large German cities. 

In addition, Bremen has the highest cycling mode share of large German cities, focusing the objectives of their Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan to shift priority to cyclists. As a result, the city achieve an active travel mode share of 23%. In total, private vehicles only account for 36% of mode share with the majority of journeys carried out using active travel modes (48%) or on public transport (16%).
