 Innovations in bicycle transport/Graz (Austria)
Graz   (Austria)
Many innovations in bicycle policy were carried out - based on a policy audit (BYPAD method) extension of bicycle paths and bicycle parking, improved information and on-street-trainings were and and continue to be implemented.

Objectives / Innovative Aspects

Improved level of bicycle policy in Graz and growth of the modal share of bicycles - thereby reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact. Set up a quality plan, pointing out the weakest parts in the bicycle system.

The Measure

- Quality management process
A bike policy audit using the BYPAD-method was realised, starting with the analysis of the status quo. It laid down priorities and measures to be implemented within CIVITAS-Trendsetter.

  • Information
A bike map containing bike routes, repair facilities and bike shops is provided in print version and online on the city-website.
A new information brochure "20 reasons to take the bike" is produced for the start of the bike season.

  • Bike and Ride (B&R)
Many new stops get equipped with B&R facilities. The basic equipment are bike racks. At the new terminal stops, roofed facilities are provided. More bike racks are also provided throughout the whole city.

  • Improvement of bike network by abolishing bottlenecks
New bike paths and crossings over the railway with underpasses were built/planned.
To these also belongs the spectacular underpass under Keplerbrücke.

  • Bike training in real traffic
Graz offers bicycle training for pupils of age 10. The training takes place on street in real traffic situations. Within CIVITAS-Trendsetter, this training was extended and is now offered to all schools in Graz.

Implementation Status

- Quality Management Process
The BYPAD process is ongoing.

  • Information
The digital map is available at this link

  • Bike and Ride (B&R)
There are now over 500 bicycle parkings available all over the city

  • Improvement of bike network by abolishing bottlenecks
To these also belongs the spectacular underpass under Keplerbrücke.

  • Bike training in real traffic
The onstreet bicycle training for all pupils of age 10 in Graz is continued.

Results

In general, the objectives could be reached. However, it is extremely difficult to estimate the contribution of individual bike measures to the modal split after most of the measures have been implemented within CIVITAS-Trendsetter: the modal share of the bike trips has not grown as much as expected.

There is ample room for an extension/improval of the measures. An important innovation was the installation of a bicycle policy coordinator in the city of Graz, who can exclusively focus on bicycle policy.
