31 new signatories to the European Road Safety Charter (Belgium)

On 6th July, the European Commission Representation in Belgium received the team of the European Road Safety Charter for a signing event. 31 new organisations committed themselves to contributing to the improvement of traffic safety and to help lower the number of fatal casualties in Europe.

The Belgian State Secretary for Mobility, Etienne Schouppe, recently announced that significant progress has been made in Belgium, with a reduction of fatal casualties from 1,500 in 2000 to 900 in 2009. Whilst these results are extremely encouraging the ambitious goal of the 3rd European Road Safety Action Plan to half the number of road accident victims in the European Union by 2010, will however not be met. With a decrease of 36%, Belgium’s statistics are similar to the European average.

The European Road Safety Charter is a platform for all types of organisations (e.g. companies, NGOs, authorities) that wish to contribute to the fight against fatal road accidents. All signatories commit to a 3-year action plan containing objective and measurable prevention actions. Since 2005, more than 1800 organisations have signed the Charter, 91 of which are from Belgium. On July 6th, 31 new Belgian organisations joined and 3 existing signatories renewed their commitments.
