Successful SMS ticket service De Lijn (Belgium)

A month after the launch of the new SMS ticketing service, the Flemish transport company De Lijn has already sold 50.000 tickets by SMS. That’s an average of 1700 per day.

The SMS tickets are valid in almost every bus and tram in Flanders. A SMS ticket for one or two hours can be bought by sending a SMS to De Lijn, before getting on the bus. The confirmation message that is received, can be used as a valid ticket on the bus or tram. The SMS ticket allows passenger to change as much as necessary. If the trips lasts longer then one or two hours, a new SMS ticket must be bought.

The main goal of the SMS tickets is to stimulate compliance to time schedule and to facilitate travel by bus. Passengers who are in a hurry, are still able to buy a ticket at the same price as tickets in advance. Furthermore delay increases if less tickets are bought at the bus. The SMS ticket is cheaper than buying a ticket at the bus and is paid by the customers’ invoice.
