Definition - Sociologists make a clear distinction between the terms sex and genderinfo-icon. Sex refers to one’s biological identity of being male or female, while gender refers to the socially learned expectations and behaviours associated with being male or female. Sex is biologically assigned while gender is culturally learned.

Relevance to SUMP – In the context of SUMP, gender equityinfo-icon refers to giving women and men the same opportunities, rights and responsibilities in the field of transport and accessibilityinfo-icon – recognising that different actions may be needed to enable equal access for different groups.
