Sales skyrocket as Danish embrace electric cars

By Lewis Macdonald / Updated: 19 Nov 2014

A combination of lower prices and improved technology has resulted in the number of electric cars in Denmark almost doubling in less than a year, according to recent figures released by Danish car importers.

The figures show that around 1 000 electric vehicles were sold in the country in the first nine months of 2014 - surpassing the 2013 total of 600 purchases. The number of electric cars registered in the country now sits at 2 700, the majority of which were purchased in the last three years. Growth has been further aided by a registration tax exemption for new electric vehicles.

The boom in electric cars has prompted concerns over the country's charging infrastructure, with many calling for more charging stations to be constructed to support current and future growth.
