Whilst there has been progress in making public transport more accessible to people with disabilities, travelling as a wheelchair user still poses significant challenges.
To raise awareness and understanding of these, a new game from BuzzFeed UK puts users in the role of a wheelchair user journeying through the UK on public transport.
It asks players to make a series of decisions as they travel from Glasgow to London on buses, trains, and the London Underground. As they do so, they are confronted with a series of difficult choices, including whether to ask a mother with a pushchair occupying the disabled space on a bus to move.
Text describes the player's journey and results of their decisions as they proceed, with a series of accompanying pictures. Whilst this unfolds, a tracker records the time delays that the player would encounter were they to make journey in real life.
BuzzFeed worked with Transport For All, a UK-based charity that provides information and advice for disabled travellers, to gather testimonies from people with disabilities on their experiences of using public transport.
Louise Ridley from Buzzfeed UK commented that: "Access to travel is really difficult for people with mobility problems, so we wanted to put the audience in the position of someone with a wheelchair so they could empathise with what the travel frustrations would be like".
The game is part of an ongoing series on BuzzFeed exploring disability in the UK.
