New book published on best practices in cycling and walking (Finland)

By Jan Christiaens / Updated: 01 Aug 2014
The Verne Transport Research Centre at Tampere University of Technology has published a new book on European best practices in promoting cycling and walking.
European countries are forerunners in promoting cycling and walking. Planners and decision makers from all over the world travel to Europe to study best practices. Now these have been gathered in one book, The best European practices in promoting cycling and walking.

Planning city traffic is a growing global challenge. To achieve ambitious goals, extensive changes need to be implemented in the coming years. Merely fine-tuning existing traffic systems is not enough; cycling and walking need to be favoured in traffic and city planning.

The material for the book was gathered under a Finnish research project called PYKÄLÄ during 2009–2011. 10 European cities that are forerunners at the international level were involved in the project. The book offers the latest knowledge to promote cycling and walking. It offers points of view, solutions and ideas for planners and decision makers in cities, municipalities and public administrations. The best European practices have been illustrated with hundreds of colour pictures.

The PYKÄLÄ-project was carried out in cooperation with eight Finnish cities, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Finnish Transport Agency and the Network of Finnish Cycling Municipalities.
