The new Bicycle Action Plan in Murcia sets out the creation of 20 km of new bike lanes in the city centre.
A total investment of about € 3.7 million is planned to construct the new lanes.
Over half of the new bike lanes will be segregated lanes built in the urban centre of the city across a total of 37 streets. An additional 8 km will be built in the historic city centre. These lanes will share space with pedestrians and cars due to narrower streets.
The new lanes will be complemented by eight new closed bicycle parking areas in the city centre. 2,000 additional bike parking spaces will be added around the city, nearly doubling the existing 2,500 spaces.
The objective of the new Bicycle Action Plan is to connect the existing network of bike lanes, making longer journeys more feasible. By improving street infrastructure with a focus on intermodality, the city hopes to encourage greater usage of both bicycles and public transport.
