Cycle for health

By Jan Christiaens / Updated: 01 Aug 2014
Researchers have identified more evidence that cycling and walking are good for health as well as the environment.
The medical journal The Lancet has published a series on health and climate change which claims that efforts to encourage walking and cycling will reduce carbon emissions and improve heart function, breathing, mental health and cancer-related problems.

An international research group has found that children who cycle regularly have a much lower risk of heart disease compared with youngsters using other means of transport. Another study has found that children aged between 8 and 13 who cycle regularly do not cut out other physical activity, as is sometimes feared.
