The boom of urban bike messenger in many Italian cities is changing the concept and attractiveness of parcel and mail deliveries in urban areas. The service was first introduced in Europe in the early 90’s and is now well developed in cities like Berlin, London, Wien and Budapest. In Italy it was introduced only two years ago by UBM (Urban Bike Messenger), a small (new) company based in Milan.

The Italian fashion and design capital embraced this green and trendy alternative to motorized “pony express”. As well as companies such as architects, consultants and law firms, also big companies like Prada and the University of Milano Bicocca, are clients of UBM. The worldwide express courier DHL has contracted UBM for part of its deliveries in the city centre. It’s not only a stylish and green option: bikes can jump (on shoulder) on Naviglio bridges or cross the Parco Sempione to cut distances and reduce delivery times.

Velocittà and eAdessoPedala have also launched bike messenger services in Rome, Bari Bici Express is active in the Southern Italian city of Bari, other bike couriers can be found in Parma, Catania, Reggio Emilia, Carpi, Firenze, Torino, Venezia, and in the city of Bologna, the first UBM branch was opened last month.

Bike messengers use typically fixed-gear bikes and cargo bikes equipped with GPS navigation devices.
