Backfitting of the Klagenfurt bus fleet with particle filters

Within the EU-project KAPA GS parts of the Klagenfurt bus fleet is backfitted with particle filters. The goal is to decrease emission and therewith the immissions of particulate matter.

Background & Objectives

The Austrian city Klagenfurt is located in the east of the Lake Wörthersee. Because of the surrounding mountains, Klagenfurt is characterised by minor air exchange and high immissions of particulate matters mainly during winter seasons.


Due to this and the existent emissions from traffic and domestic fuel, Klagenfurt exceed the EU-limits of particulate matter from time to time with all undesirable effects to the environment and peoples health.

The goal is to counter this problem with different organisational and technological measures within the KAPA GS-project (Klagenfurts project against PM10 together with Graz and South Tyrol).


One of these technological measures is the backfitting of public transport buses with particulate filters in Klagenfurt.

At first, only one bus of the Klagenfurter Stadtwerke AG (public services Klagenfurt) was fitted with a BAUMOT particulate filter to measure the efficiency.


50% of the costs were subsidies. One half of this encouragement was paid by the European Union (means 25% overall). The rest was paid by the Stadtwerke Klagenfurt.


The On-Board-Measurements of the University of Technology Graz showed that an efficiency between 95% and 98% could be expected.


In 2006, 15 busses were refitted with such a highly efficient BAUMOT-filter with overall costs of € 140,000.


No problems during operation were reported. The filter proofed the expected 99% efficiency in particle removal from the exhaust gas in practice.


The propiortion of NO2-emissions in the NOx-emissions reached 20%. It is expected that no serious increase of primary NO2-emissions result from the use of the filters.
