    The purpose of the project is to encourage elder people to keep cycling in a daily manner to help them to stay in touch with the surrounding society and stay health. The project involved the Fietsersbond, transport organizations & government. It began in 2001 and is ongoing in 2009.

    In 1997, the public transport operator in Prague renewed its passenger information systems for its tram and bus networks with on-board and stop-based equipment (bus and tram). The main objective was to improve access to and quality of public transport. It took addresed vision-impaired travellers in particular.

    At the time of German reunification there were no stops or stations with same-level boarding in Leipzig. Until then, tramway boarding was in most cases from the track in the roadway, even on lines with the tram running in separated tracks with stop islands in between. Some of these stops provide a higher bottom step level of 8-10 cm. The tram boarding level for Tatra vehicles was approx. 30 cm with two more steps to reach the floor some 90 cm above the top of the rail. This was a difficult undertaking, especially for older passengers. People with restricted mobility were rarely able to use these trams without special assistance. Some years after the reunification, private automobiles lured many passengers away from public transport.

    A software tool is being developed to test the impact of transport policies on socially excluded groups. It can give indicative costs of implementing accessibility improvements. It has been used to calculate the cost per head of improvements to walking for elderly people in St Albans.

    GVB, the Graz public transport operator, strives to make public transport even more attractive. For this reason passenger information at bus and tram stops and stations within the municipal area of Graz displays the next lines (number of line and final stop) in real-time, each with their actual expected departure times. Since March 2006 all of these 150 GVB information points also display the letter "N" or a wheelchair symbol respectively, to show if the particular vehicle (tram/bus) is a low-floor vehicle and accessible in a barrier-free way. This facilitates the planning of the trip, especially where wheelchair users, persons using a walking frame, carrying heavy luggage or passengers with a pushchair are concerned.
