    The project Camí Escolar (Way to school), approved by the National Union of Mobility (Taula Nacional de Mobilitat) follows the recommendation of the European Council and UNICEF.

    Increase of traffic jams, and traffic in general, on Belgrade territory induced large number of traffic accidents, often with death outcome. Category that needed special attention were children from elementary schools, especially after acknowledging that most vulnerable traffic zones were streets around elementary and pre schools. Collaboration of certain city secretaries produced action under the name of “Protect the children in traffic”. This action considered measures for upgrade of safety of children in traffic, and reduce of traffic accidents.

    A point system is one in which a driver’s licensing authority issues demerits or penalty points to drivers on conviction for road traffic offenses. A major offense may lead to more than the maximum allowed points being issued (or withdrawn), or the accumulation or loss of too many points over a given period of time can lead to additional penalties, including fines and more importantly the suspension or revocation of the driver’s license.

    In Serbia, on territory of Belgrade and Nis, during October 2006, police officers have started patrolling by riding horses. Horses are irreplaceable help to policemen on public places, especially during big sport competitions. Using horses means fewer cars on streets, reduction of pollution, noise and less traffic jams. It is important to support this action which is the way to make Belgrade one of world metropolises whose public institutions, since many years ago, have used horses.

This in turn has secured the full support of Government enabling funding to be tied to delivery of the standard.     In the Czech Republic there are about 30 children killed in the accidents each year and thousands are injured. This severe situation on the Czech roads led to establishing a program Safe roads to school managed by The Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation, sponsored by financial group AXA.

    Street schools have been introduced, in primary schools, for the first time in Bolzano on 1989. It consists on a temporary traffic block along streets usually very busy due to the presence of parents picking up their kids from school. With the introduction of street schools kids safety is guaranteed, together with their transport autonomy and a relief on urban traffic. Street schools are already an institution, that proved to last, since it is part of a wider plan consisting in street education, in both sense, for the environment and in mobility.
