By Admin / Updated: 15 Jan 2015

Welcome to Eltis Mobility Update!

In this edition we highlight the recent European Transport White Paper 2011, the most important policy document in the field of transport and mobility which sets out European policy until 2050. Read all about it in this Mobility Update, and also on www.eltis.org.

We also provide an overview on 'what's new and happening' in Europe concerning urban mobility. You are also invited to take a look at and join Friends of Eltis, our new interactive community platform, and you can also find out who won the Eltis Award for the best submitted paper to the Velo City Conference in Seville and Photo of the Month award.

Transport White Paper 2011: towards a competitive and resource efficient transport system.

The recently published Transport White Paper promises a revolution in European mobility. The Commission adopted a comprehensive strategy (Transport 2050) for a competitive transport system that will increase mobility and remove major barriers in key areas. At the same time, the proposals will dramatically reduce Europe's dependence on imported oil and cut carbon emissions in transport by 60% by 2050. To achieve this a transformation in Europe's current transport system will be required. By 2050, key goals will include:

  • No more conventionally-fuelled cars in cities.
  • 40% use of sustainable low carbon fuels in aviation; at least 40% cut in shipping emissions.
  • A 50% shift of medium distance intercity passenger and freight journeys from road to rail and waterborne transport.
  • All of which will contribute to a 60% cut in transport emissions by the middle of the century.

The Eltis's news team has published an overview of the Transport White Paper 2011. The original complete document is only one click away and Eltis will keep you updated on further developments.
