Topics & Program

The training session in Krakow will be carried out from April 21 - 23 2009. Deadline for registration is March 20.
Registration form and information can be obtained here.
In each of the training sessions 3 topics will be taught. Each session per topic lasts approx. 6-8 hours. Additional to that a study visit will be organised. Find the different topics which have been selected after a comprehensive survey among the target group below.

The following topics will be taught in Krakow:

Transport solutions for people with reduced mobility
In order for people with reduced mobility to travel around easily and safely in an inclusive manner, it is essential that all of the links in the transport chain are barrier-free. This training session will look at the range of public transport services available in our towns and cities and highlight the characteristics, which make them barrier-free. There will be discussions on "Universal Design" and how it needs to be incorporated into the design and practice of modern accessible public transport systems to provide for barrier-free journeys by all citizens. Methods and tools for evaluating and assessing public transport systems to ensure barrier-free travel will be presented and used in a practical exercise on a selected journey using Krakow's public transport system.

Access restrictions and environmental zones
Access Restrictions and Environmental Zones are powerful traffic and environmental management measures that can bring major benefits, especially to town and city centres. However, they face some significant implementation barriers, particularly in relation to public acceptability. In this session you will learn about the main types of access restrictions and environmental zones, the benefits they can realise, how to implement them, vital mistakes to avoid, and how much they cost. The session will also provide details of a number of case studies from Italy, the Czech Republic, the UK, Germany and Spain, and may also include a short site visit. The interactive element of the training will enable you to use what you have learned to think about how you might use Access Restrictions and/or Environmental Zones to achieve transport policy objectives in a hypothetical town or city.

Transport socialisation and education
This training session will raise awareness about the fact that socialisation of people in favour of more sustainable mobility modes (cycling, bus, train) is not only possible but crucial. This should create a counter balance to the prevailing socialisation of very young children in favour of travelling by car and achieve more sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility in the future. In order to achieve this it is necessary to exert influence on traffic behaviour of very young children and parents starting at birth and continuing throughout kindergarten and primary school. This means influencing children in the phase of life where the most important behavioural patterns are defined through the following actions:
  • Create specific motivational programmes for kindergartens, nursery schools and antenatal classes
  • Motivational programmes for primary schools and integration of sustainable mobility into teaching.
  • Influencing parents through their children's programmes for home to school and leisure trips.
